Heart of Christmas Kids Advent Devotional Day 1

NOTE: These devotional will mainly be verses and questions. My goal is to ensure that my children understand the meaning of the verse and it how it relates to the true celebration of Christmas. I will listen to their response and lead our discussion based on their thoughts and questions. My responses will depend on their level of understanding of the verse we are discussing. We will then hang the ornament depicted each day on our Heart of Christmas tree.

See my original post detailing the inspiration behind my Heart of Christmas Advent Devotional HERE!

Day 1 – Why do we celebrate Christmas?

Today we begin our countdown to Christmas! There is much focus in the world around us on presents, Santa Claus, decorations, and Christmas trees. Each day up to Christmas we will spend time remembering the true heart and meaning of Christmas. We will look at different verses each day and discuss together why that particular verse carries meaning for us as Christmas approaches.

Today's Verse:

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

  • Because of God's love for us, He sent His one and only Son to earth. Why did God send Jesus to earth?
  • Why do we celebrate Christmas?
  • Why is the birth of Jesus so important?

  • Why do we so easily forget the real meaning of Christmas?

Memory Verse

As a part of our December celebration of the Heart of God, we are going to work on memorizing the passage in Luke 2 that tells us of the birth of Jesus. My mom taught this passage to me and now I want to teach it to you. First, let's talk about the whole passage and discuss what happened.

Eva  – “’Glory to God in the Highest!’” (Luke 2:14a)

Grace/Anthony – “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.” (Luke 2:1)

(As an almost five year old who is new to the English Language, Eva will have parts of a verse to work on each week. Anthony and Grace love memorizing scripture and are always up for a challenge. Let's see how quickly they can progress through the passage.)

NOTE: I learned this passage in the KJV which is not the usual version I memorize in now, but it will be forever embedded in my heart in KJV. Plus, for this particular passage, KJV has such a lovely poetic flow to it, thus my children will learn it in KJV as well.

Blessings this Christmas Season,
