Excitement fills the air
Laughter floating down the stairs
The pitter patter of little feet
But what is the excitement all about?
It is the presents under the tree?
The lights and bright colors all around?
Have we forgotten why we celebrate?
What's happened to Christmas?
We celebrate a baby born long ago.
God's only son
Sent for us
To save us.
Why do we so easily forget?
Why do we let Satan win?
We are here because of God's heart.
His heart of love
The heart of Christmas
We worship not just baby in a manger,
But our risen Savior.
Let us not forget this year.
Let us teach our children not to forget
The real heart of Christmas.
As the busy Christmas season was approaching, I tasked myself with the job of finding an advent devotional series to do with my kids. There are so many wonderful choices that I felt a little like I was drowning. I finally decided on the Jesse Tree but started to feel overwhelmed with the idea of making all the ornaments. The ones available for purchase, while beautiful, were out of our budget, so I figured I could just make them. I enjoy crafts from time to time but I would not classify myself as crafty, so as the task of making the ornament loomed before me, I began to get a little stressed. As I sat there stressing over something as silly as ornament making, God hit me with an idea!
Over the past 17 years, my mom has given me and my siblings a heart shaped ornament each Christmas. What if I made up my own devotional for my kids and used the heart ornaments? We could talk about the Heart of Christmas, God's heart for us! I get excited every time I think about it!
So I give you the inaugural year of the Heart of Christmas kids devotionals!
I am currently putting together the verses I want to use and will draft questions and a little prose to go along with each verse making it easy for kids to understand and interact while teaching them about the true meaning of Christmas (see my post What's Happened to Christmas)
The devotional will begin on Monday, December 9 and will go through Christmas. I will be posting the devotionals daily here on my blog and linking to them on Facebook.
I would love to have you join us on this journey into the heart of our Father, the true heart of Christmas.
