God's Heart for Orphans - Will You be My Accountability Partner?

"A father to the fatherless, defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families . . ." (Ps. 68:5-6a)

About one month from today is Orphan Sunday (November 4, 2012), a day to celebrate God's heart for Orphans worldwide. As I was contemplating adoption and orphans, I was suddenly struck with desire to a read a book about adoption. As you can imagine, I have read numerous books on adoption, and more specifically on Chinese adoption as that is very close to my heart. So I perused the books listed on the Orphan Sunday website and was immediately drawn to Fields of the Fatherless by Tom Davis which I immediately downloaded and started reading.

Fields of the Fatherless: Discover the Joy of Compassionate Living -

God doesn't call everyone to adopt, but He does ask us to love our neighbors and care for those in need, whether they are next door or across an ocean. I was particularly struck by a statement Steven Curtis Chapman makes in the introduction to Fields of the Fatherless, "God has called us-your family and mine-to work together in bringing His love into this world. Right now there are millions of children around the world in need of a loving home. How are we-the church-going to respond to the heart of God to care for orphans?" This statement really convicted me. What am I doing to reach out those in need around me? We don't have to be in another country to find those in need though sometimes that is where we are called. What are we doing in our own communities to reach out to those in need? Are we demonstrating God's love? I am going to make a conscious effort to find service opportunities right here in San Antonio. I have several sweet friends who have amazing hearts for giving of their time and energy to help others. Their hearts have inspired me, but I have yet to follow through. Who will join me and who will hold me accountable to stop all my excuses?

This time last year, I remember thinking, as Orphan Sunday and National Adoption Month (November) were upon us, "I believe we are called to sponsor a child in China that Grace can correspond with as she gets older and share the truth of God's love and Jesus sacrifice." Did I follow through with this? I bow my head in shame and confess to you that I did not. So I stand before you now and commit to sponsoring a child. There is an organization called Fujian Kids that has sponsorships for children in need in the Fujian province of China which is where Grace was born. I ask you to hold me accountable to this! I will report back once we have signed up! I am getting excited as I write this thinking about the child God will connect us with in Grace's own home province of China!

Blessings to all on this lovely fall evening and thanks for listening to me. :)

"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us know love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." (I John 3:16-18, NIV)
